How to Survive and Thrive in an Empty Nest

by msnatali

You've just dropped the last of your brood off at the dorm; now it is time to face your empty nest.

This generation of mothers often talk with pride about their children and express a sense of relief and joy as they watch their children grow into their own. Moms sending their youngest to college now are less likely to experience the classic empty nest syndrome. Few describe lingering depression, apathy, and loss of identity when children leave the nest.

While the question may no longer be "Who am I if I'm not taking care of the kids?" the reality is that many mothers find themselves with a renewed sense of freedom. As it turns out, dads are the ones taking their child's departure to heart. According to a 2008 study from Wheaton College, fathers were actually less emotionally prepared for an empty nest than mothers.

The secret isn't so much figuring out how to cope with a kid at college as it is figuring out how to take advantage of the situation. If you're looking to reorient your life after a recent vacancy, the following steps will help you discover that the empty nest isn't a bad thing at all.

How to Create a Hard-to-Crack Password

by Virginia DeBolt

Simple passwords put your online security -- and all your information -- at risk, but you may be surprised by how many people have easy-to-crack passwords.

A recent study of 10,000 Hotmail, MSN and Live.com passwords that were exposed online found that “123456″ was the most commonly used password. That no-brainer appeared 64 times.

Forty-two percent of the passwords used lowercase letters from a to z; only 6 percent mixed alpha-numeric and other characters, according to the analysis published in Wired Magazine.

Luckily, there are a few simple rules you can follow to create smart passwords that are hard to crack to protect yourself on the World Wide Web.

How to Stop Swearing Like A Sailor

by J. Morris

You know the words. The F word. The S word and all the inventive combos in between. George Carlin identified several of them from his comedy monologue "Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television." But they’ve been around long before; "dirty" words go back centuries, and in every culture. Seems humans have always had an innate need to spice up the language with the pepper of swear words.

Maybe you say them in anger when someone cuts you off in traffic. Maybe you say them to emphasize a point. Maybe you do it, like when stubbing your toe, as an ingrained distress call. The worst is when you are just so used to saying them that you don’t notice you’re a gutter mouth all the time.

Sailors, as an unstated rule, can get away with it, thus the cliché to swear like a sailor. But you’re not a sailor, are you? And you’re long past the age when your mother can threaten to wash your mouth out with soap.

Swear words are like a virus; once you say them, unless treated, they continue to spread. They infiltrate your vocabulary and soon you and your friends are dropping F-bombs all the time until one day you find yourself asking Uncle Phil at Thanksgiving to pass the F-in' gravy.

Is it an addiction? Not physically, but it is a habit â€" a habit that needs to be broken, as it can be detrimental to your social and work life. There is a time and place for everything and swearing is no different. Follow these steps, if you choose, to drop the swearing habit. And if not, well…take a friggin' hike.

How to Thwart Candy-Eating Criminals

by Kristen Fischer

With trick-or-treating just around the corner, you may want to limit your child's candy intake. Children that eat too many treats are at risk for becoming violent during adulthood, according to a new study by Simon Moore, a senior lecturer in Violence and Society Research at Cardiff University in the U.K. So, instead of giving your child a Blow Pop or a Kit Kat to get him or her out of a fitâ€"try these discipline tactics that work just as wellâ€"and help prevent sugar crashes that can be worse than the tantrum itself.

How to Boost a Healthy Bust

by Gigi Starr

Fashionable ladies know that sexy cleavage is always in style, and that sagging breasts can look really untidy. However, the boob game isn't always a sure bet - even when there are top stylists available to help make magic happen.

"Cosmopolitan Magazine" took a look at some top stars to see how they handle their bosom buddies. Even with the assistance of stylists and fab friends, dressing to accent a healthy bust is still a hit-or-miss proposition. Judging from pictures, it's all too easy to crush, restrict, or otherwise flatten a really great bust line.

Take Lauren Conrad, for instance. Her small, youthful breasts end up becoming lost beneath a tight, confining evening dress bodice that offers little support, combined with an non-supportive open halter neckline. In Cosmopolitan's opinion, "The wide straps [of her dress] press down on Lauren's breasts, making them appear uneven." The solution? Simple underwire cups, which lift and hold the breasts securely.

Also, never forget that the key to a healthy bust is good treatment and care of the breasts. This means regular breast self-examinations and mammograms - not just a drawer full of the latest Wonderbra. With proper dressing and good self-care, beautiful cleavage is just a moment's dressing away.
